Review: Shadowed Heart: A Luc & Summer Novel by Laura Florand

Shadowed Heart: A Luc & Summer Novel (Amour et Chocolat #5.5) by Laura Florand
Publication date: December 3rd 2014
My rating: 5 stars

Three words, to shake a man’s existence.

Three words, to call on all a man’s strength, all his courage, all his love, and all his ability to hope and dream…and trust.

Three words, to wake up every fear a man has ever had.

“I’m pregnant, Luc.”

Now how could a man be perfect enough for that?

Romantic Times calls Laura Florand's writing "sensuous and sumptuous", awarding her their Seal of Excellence and nominating her for Best Book of the Year, and NPR says it's "explosive, sensual . . . and utterly sweet".

Now in this sequel to The Chocolate Heart, Florand takes us into the heart of happily ever after with a story full of love, hope, and friendship. Struggling to get their new restaurant off the ground in the south of France, newly married top chef Luc Leroi and his wife Summer must face all their demons at the prospect of becoming parents. Fortunately, Summer's cousins and Luc's rival chefs join forces with the couple to prove that not even a top chef has to handle everything alone and happiness really can last ever after.

My Thoughts:
Shadowed Heart was a beautiful continuation of Luc and Summer’s story.  As usual Laura Florand manages to dig deep into my heart and stir up so many emotions!  A definite must for any fan of the Amour et Chocolat series!

Luc and Summer had the happily ever after in The Chocolate Heart when they marry, but Shadowed Heart covers the early months of their marriage before the glorious epilogue contained in the The Chocolate Heart.

I love how Laura Florand captures the realities and ups and downs of a long term romance. The time after “I do” can be a rollercoaster of emotion. One minute you feel as high as a kite thinking there’s no way you could be happier and the next you’re taking a downward plunge into an abyss of hurt.  So many insecurities are felt in the beginning years, because you’re just getting to really know each other.  For two people riddled with insecurities, like Summer and Luc, these times are even more tumultuous than for ones who come from a settled, loving family home.  Both Luc and Summer had an intense need for reassurance, but both were scared to show their vulnerability.  It was ironic that when Luc and Summer would let that need show it was such a soothing balm to the other, knowing that they craved the other’s love and affection and yet, years of neglect from their families made both hesitant to show this need for fear of rejection.

A pregnancy, even if planned and wanted can cause all those lurking insecurities to rise to the surface and bubble over. So when Summer announced she’s pregnant, they’re both excited but also so very scared. Summer and Luc worry that they’re inadequate and will be no different from their sorry excuses for parents.  I seriously wanted to throttle Summer’s mother! Ugh! They both also worry about not being enough for each other over the long haul.

It’s easy for misunderstandings and misinterpretations of events to cause a deep rift between a couple, but fortunately for Luc and Summer they had a strong love for each other to see things through. Another huge asset was the help and support they received from their friends and relatives: Sylvain and Cade, Dominique and Jaime, Patrick and Sarah, Gabriel and Jolie and even from some of the new hirers at Luc’s restaurant.  Having a loyal support system goes a long way in making a marriage last.  Friends who look out for your best interests, give good truthful advice, even if it hurts sometimes, and those who can help you take a step back and look at the big picture.  Luc and Summer’s support system did all of that and made them laugh in the process.  Humor is a must in long-term relationships as well.  Ms. Florand depicts all of this vividly!

I empathized with Luc and Summer’s feelings even knowing much of the negative ones were from insecurity and faulty assumptions. No worries, even though they both struggle, they would come back to the truth of the matter: they loved each other intensely and with all their heart! They didn’t allow hurt to fester and poison their relationship.

As usual, I have so many passages highlighted in my e-reader for the sheer beauty of writing or because of the deep feelings it would evoke in me.  Every time I pick up one of Ms. Florand’s books I’m in awe of her writing talents. Being able to convey emotions in a way that speaks to a reader so profoundly it’s like she wrote the book especially for you is an amazing talent indeed!

About the author: Laura Florand is the international bestselling author of the Amour et Chocolat series (The Chocolate Thief, The Chocolate Kiss, etc). Her books have been translated into seven languages, received the RT Seal of Excellence and starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, and been recommended by NPR, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal, among others. Four of her past five books have been recommended reads by Dear Author and two have been Sizzling Book Club Picks by Smart B*, Trashy Books.

Laura was born in a small town in Georgia, but the travel bug bit her early. After a Fulbright year in Tahiti, a semester in Spain, and backpacking in New Zealand and Greece, she ended up living in Paris, where she met and married her own handsome Frenchman. You can find out quite a bit more about those crazy adventures in her memoir, Blame It on Paris. She is now a lecturer in Romance Studies at Duke University. Contrary to popular opinion, that means she studies and teaches French language and culture, rather than romance. Fortunately, French culture includes French chocolate, research to which she is very dedicated. You can catch some glimpses of that research in the books, on her blog, and on her Facebook site, where you are welcome to join her and other readers!

Review: The Chocolate Rose (Amour et Chocolate #3) by Laura Florand

The Chocolate Rose by Laura Florand
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing
Publication Date: April 23rd 2013
My rating: 5 stars

Her father’s worst enemy... Top chef Gabriel Delange never forgave his old nemesis Pierre Manon for all the other chef had cost him. One stolen rose... And he most certainly couldn’t stand the sight of his own most famous dessert, the legendary Rose, claimed as Pierre’s own on the cover of his new cookbook. A substitute victim... But even Gabriel could hardly go through with a lawsuit when he learned the older chef had just had a stroke. Especially not when Pierre had one very cute daughter willing to be Gabriel’s victim instead. Jolie Manon... As a child, Jo had seen her family torn apart by her top chef father’s obsession with his work. She had given years of her own adult life to trying to pull him out of depression, after he lost a star. Now a food writer, she might be fascinated with a chef’s work, but she knew how to guard her heart. She would never allow another chef into her life. Unless he blackmailed her into it... Welcome to the heat and sun of Provence, where jasmine and roses climb up old colored walls, where fountains play in ancient stone villages, and where even a beast can prove he is a prince at heart…

She gritted her teeth, torn between the overwhelming desire to hit him and the one to completely give in, to be just -easy. Just go with it. Just get hauled of to somewhere dark and dangerous and growled at some more

I’m going to have to say that The Chocolate Rose has been my favourite book so far of the Amour et Chocolate series, I adored the first two books; The Chocolate Thief and The Chocolate Kiss, and the fantastic antagonistic relationships that Florand was able to weave into her stories, but Gabriel and Jolie’s story just had more of an impact on me.

Again like the previous books, something dire gets our MC Jolie to travel down to meet with Gabriel, what follows is a funny situation which provokes Jolie working in Gabriel’s kitchen for the morning. It’s obvious that’s there an instinct attraction between the two of them and this inextinguishable fire, but with so many hurdles, which could hurt Jolie in more ways than one I did have my doubts whether this relationship would work. But Gabriel really did make me believe. I loved the dual pov’s we were given again in this book, but more so because I truly fell for Gabriel and truly wanted to learn about his inner feelings, desires and secrets, basically everything about him. Gabriel was an arrogant person, but he did have every right to be, he’d lost a lot of his life a while back, but was able to jump back to his feet and make his way up into a very successful person and chef. But under that arrogance was also one of the most vulnerable love interests I had come across in this series so far. It was truly heart wrenching at times seeing him put his heart on the line time and time again, I could understand some of Jolie’s reservations, but on so many occasions Gabriel had demonstrated how much he truly cared about her. And really this was a relationship that Gabriel deserved ( they both really deserved) but then we were given snippets into his past love life or lack thereof, I felt like pushing Jolie out of the way so I could have him to myself, (he’d definitely made it to my list of fictional crushes, this guy just was totally swoon worthy). He was one of those characters who knew how to take care of his girl, yes he was eager to get further within his relationship with Jolie as soon as possible, some may see this as rushing too much, but who wouldn’t want a guy as hot as Gabriel wanting to involve you in his life as much as he could?. I lived seeing him get all defensive when Jolie would be spending time with another chef, but most of all I loved his growls, being a Chef pâtissier he was used to growling at his staff to get order in his kitchen, but when his growl was directed towards Jolie, *sigh* he was super hot!

What I loved the most about this book was even though there was all this heat and sexual tension running between Jolie and Gabriel, and all you want them to do is kiss some more and finally get together. You kind of forget that their relationship in this story only spans a couple of weeks. Some may consider this to be a bit insta-love, but Florand totally makes Gabriel and Jolie’s relationship work and believable; their feelings for each other are so deep and meaningful that it seems as if they’ve known each other for way longer!

Once again I loved the way the story was set in France, the setting certainly added to making the relationship between Gabriel and Jolie appear more romantic. With its gorgeous settings  I have truly fallen head over heels by this series by Florand so far, I don’t think anyone can top my love for Gabriel so far, but with Florand’s books I guess I shall just have to wait and see.

Favourite quotes:

"You're not in the way". A little growl slipped into his tone, rubbing all over his skin. "I told you. If I say you can be here you can be here"

"They'll agree to whatever I ask them to or we'll go somewhere else. We can share the last name, so it won't take up that much more space"

"I love the combination of roaring... and sweet"

The Frenchman (Crime Royalty Romance #1) by Lesley Young
Expected Publication Date: December 4th 2014

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18755773-better-homes-and-hauntings
Fleur Smithers rarely veers off the straight and (excruciatingly) narrow. So moving to the seaport town of Toulon to live with her newfound biological mother—an inspector with the French National Police—for one year is a pretty major detour.

Son of France’s crime royalty family and international rugby star, Louis Messette, is devoted to his sport, famille and nothing else. But the carefree American he meets one night changes everything. She sparks a desire in him like no other. Possession takes root. She will do as he commands.

Bit by bit Fleur slips into the Frenchman’s realm of wanton pleasure agreeing to his one condition: that she keep their affair secret. She serves up her heart without reservation in the hub of the glittering Côte d’Azur, and the along the soulful Seine in Paris, unaware of the danger she is in. For her new lover’s “family business” will pit her against her mother, the police woman sworn to bring down the Messettes. And by then, far more than Fleur’s heart will be on the line.
Excerpt:

My chest hurt from a strange new kind of anxiety, high-pitched, full of woe. Dread closed in on me. I’d never felt so exposed standing before one human being before. And realization that he could desecrate me with a mere cold shoulder sank in.
And maybe that was his point. But why?
“Is that what you want? Do you want me to go?” I whispered, trying to keep my voice steady.
I swear a universe of emotion flickered in his eyes, but it presented itself so quickly, and was hidden from view, I wondered if it existed at all.
I waited.
He shrugged. As if I was asking him what color tie he wanted to wear.
I gasped. The floor opened up beneath me, and, as I fell, I knew it then. He was the keeper—the keeper of our connection. And he’d decided to punish me, without explanation, to prove a point that he refused to explain.
I recalled thinking once that he was a rotten man. What had happened to that idea? It was suddenly clear and present again.
I rushed into my dress, zipping it up on the way to the door. I stumbled because tragedy lay before me.
Was I going to leave?
My heart was up in my throat, and tears ran down my cheeks.
Why was he so mean?
I didn’t understand!
I was steps from his door. Yes. I was running home. To my mother. Like the child he clearly thought I was. The lump in my throat ached, as with one last gasp of disbelief, I pulled on the handle, desperate for him to stop me and desperate to get away, but . . . the door wouldn’t budge.
I tugged again.
Oh.
His hand was above me, holding it closed. The tattoo glared down at me. He’d moved—fast. To stop me.
He didn’t want me to leave after all.
I didn’t know whether to be relieved or terrified or angry.
I felt, only, numb.
When he stepped into me, my body moved of its own volition as close to the door as possible.
Seems he’d gotten what he was so desperate to have. I was scared of him.
He buried his face in my hair, and my chest burned. Tears of hurt streamed down my face. What had just happened? My heart was pumping so fast it was going to burst and spray black everywhere, and I didn’t even know why!
“Fleur,” he whispered.
No. I shook my head, but his body had drawn close and followed mine as I tried to shift away against the door.
“Fleur,” he whispered.
I paused. We stood there, barely touching, me trapped in a standstill of . . . hope. So much hope. Pure hope. It was a field of azure bluebells on a Texas highway promising to bud every spring without tending or mercy. I didn’t know what he wanted from me, not by the way he had said my name, or in general, anymore, and I didn’t care, not as long as he wanted me.
Slowly, gently, he pulled me into him, and I let him.
I let him.
And . . . time began again.

Lesley Young is an award-winning Canadian journalist by day, and obsessive novelist by night. Her debut novel, Sky’s End (Soulmate Publishing, 2013) hit #9 on Amazon’s sci-fi romance paid best-seller list in its first three months of release.

Not too long after that, she started dreaming up quirky heroines who lose their hearts to extremely powerful, flawed heroes, only to find out what love really is while on a dangerous adventure abroad. She called it the Crime Royalty Romance series, and landed herself a pretty big agent at Spencerhill Associates. Never one to take the obvious path, Lesley ultimately decided to self-publish. She’s never sure who or what will pop up in her imagination next. The Irishman? The Spaniard? The Hawaiian? Anything’s possible, and she loves suggestions (or recommendations of really hot, er, talented, actors to work as a muses).

Stay in touch with her and feel free to forward on decent options at Facebook.com/LesleyYoungBooks and @LesleyYoungBks (note: Charlie Hunnam’s already taken the lead role of The American—#3 Crime Royalty Romance...coming soon!).

Monthly Recap: November

Hi everyone, can you believe that its already December? Did you all open your advent calendars already? That was of course the first thing I did today with my dairy milk advent calendar! Can you believe there's only 24 sleeps until Christmas? This year I have been proper on it and only have one more Christmas present to buy, its been utterly chaotic in town, that I decided to do everything super early, This month has also been great reading-wise for me too, I managed to read 13 books! I never tend to read more than 10 in a month these days, I think this could highly likely due to binge reading Laura Florand's series, but I'm hoping I'll be able to manage this many books this month too. Here's our recap of November!

Number of Books read:
Jasprit: 13!!! (I never read this many!)
Rachel: 14

Highest rating:
Jasprit: 5 stars

Only Enchanting (The Survivors' Club, #4) I Saw Her Standing There (Green Mountain, #3) Make You Remember (Dumont Bachelors, #2) Made for You

A League of Her Own Deadline All For You (Coming Home, #4)

Best read of last month:
Jasprit: The Chocolate Rose by Laura Florand. This series was absolutely amazing, but this book by far was my favourite, the characters just had the perfect chemistry, they created all the swoons, but also bought out many laugh out loud moments too.

Rachel:
Burn For Me by Illona Andrews. It was a superb start to their newest Urban Fantasy series and probably the sexiest book I've read by them!

Book which surprised me the most:
Jasprit: Alls Fair in Love and Chocolate (a short novella in Kiss the Bride anthology. I normally do't do anthologies, but this short story was such a cute read, you would think with me binge reading this series, it would be hard for me to find some stories that stood out for me, but this one certainly snuck its way to my heart with its charming storyline.

Rachel:
Made For You by Melissa Marr because I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. I have a real tricky relationship with YA, but this was creepy with a smart heroine! Also, Only Enchanting by Mary Balogh. I don't pick up historical fiction very often, but I should! This one pulled my emotions all over the place in the very best way!

Fictional crush of the month:
Jasprit: Gabriel Delange from The Chocolate Rose! I've finally decided that I need to move to France and get married to a chef there as all the ladies I've read about seem to be doing this. Also chefs that growl tend to be my favourite *sigh*

Rachel:
Colton from I Saw Her Standing There by Marie Force. He was super sweet, caring and insatiable!

Three books I'm most looking forward to this month:

Jasprit:

(Click on titles for Goodreads link)

I'm taking part in the Debutahon hosted by Books of Amber this month, its a perfect way to catch up with all the books that I wanted to read for a while, Open Road Summer and Prisoner of Night and Fog are certainly two of those books. And with so much praise for Revis' books so far, I thought it was high time that I read something by her this month, and the things I've heard about The Body Electric have been wonderful so far!

Rachel:

Walking On Air (Valance Family, #1)  Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle, #3) Vision in Silver (The Others, #3)

I haven't read anything by Catherine Anderson but she's a very popular romance author. I'm looking forward to discovering her charm.  I listened to The Dream Thieves again last month in preparation for Blue Lily, Lily Blue, for some reason I didn't like the story as much this time around, Ronan's chapters bored me and I couldn't wait to get back to Blue or even her mother and the ladies of Fox Way.  The Others is one of my favorite series in the Fantasy genre so I can't wait to pick up the third installment: Vision In Silver!

I'm (Rachel) on Pinterest often looking at bookstores and libraries I'd love to visit in person.  Hatchards is supposed to be the oldest bookstore in London, according to the caption on this pin and I wished I would've known of its existence when I was there back in 2013 so I could visited!

How was your month of November?
