Review: The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines, #3)

The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines #3) by Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication date: February 12th 2013
My rating: 5 stars
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

The Indigo Spell was a mix of mystery, a little danger, and all kinds of swoony goodness!  Lovers of Sydrian will NOT be disappointed!

After the events of The Golden Lily, Sydney is questioning her beliefs and her unquestioning loyalty she’s had for the Alchemists.   Her affinity and use of magic also disturbs her.   Add to that, she’s mixed up over her feelings for Adrian.  Being a Moroi and a human, being together goes against everything she’s been taught to believe: it’s wrong and unnatural.  But Sydney can’t help but replay that passionate kiss they shared, and even before that, the closeness and chemistry that led to it.

Now, Ms. Terwillinger warns of a new dangerous threat to Sydney, a witch on the loose draining girls with power.  Sydney has no choice but to submerge herself deeper into the magic world as a defense, and to help save these potential victims.   Finding Marcus Finch, the former Alchemist is also a top priority, seeing as he might provide information on the Alchemists’ dark secrets.

I think I’m one of the few out there, who’s loved Sydney from the beginning.  I love her analytical and sharp mind.  I found her social awkwardness endearing and hilarious, but in The Indigo Spell, Sydney comes into her own!  She’s had a lot of changes and upheavals in her thinking, and I think she’s grown so much from the Sydney we met in the Vampire Academy series.  Even though, I’ve always loved Adrian from the beginning, I never thought of him as viable boyfriend material.   He was charismatic, but all over the place.  In the Bloodlines series he’s grown so much, no longer is he the spoiled and pampered playboy.  Not that he’s lost his mischievous edge, he just thinks of more than himself now.  First and foremost, he thinks of Sydney:

“Well, you can think what you want, so long as you remember—no matter how ordinary things seem between us—I’m still here, still in love with you, and care about you more than any other guy, evil or otherwise, ever will.”

“No one’s going to throw you around and get away with it,” said Adrian.“What happened with us has nothing to do with you,” retorted Marcus.Everything about her has to do with me.”—Adrian

He was so sweet and protective over Sydney, I had a big smile on my face, and I was basically doing a happy dance throughout the book!

I’m pleased to report that Jill was far less irritating than she had been in previous books, but maybe that’s because she didn’t play a huge part in this installment.  Eddie and Angeline took a back seat, as well, and I found myself missing them a little.  I have a feeling in the next book all three will have a much larger role.

With so much love for this book, I have a little unease when I think of what’s probably coming in the next book.  Of course, that won’t prevent me from diving straight in the moment is comes out.  As always, Richelle Mead does not disappoint!

Favorite Quote:

Adrian tipped my face up toward his and kissed me.  Like always, the world around me stopped moving.  No, the world became Adrian, only Adrian.  Kissing him was as mind-blowing as ever, full of that same passion and need I had never believed I’d feel.  But today, there was even more to it.  I no longer had any doubt whether this was wrong or right.  It was the culmination of a long journey…or maybe the beginning of one.

I'm dying to read this asap! After the ending of The Golden Lily, I'm craving to find out what happens between Sydney and Adrian. I agree, I've always liked Sydney, too, but I'm glad she's getting stronger and more independent. Can't wait to see how this series will proceed. It seems to be getting better with each book. Amazing review :)

Oh Rachel I'm so glad to hear that you've always like Sydney! I'm in the same boat. Rose is actually the reason I couldn't get past the first VA book, she wasn't my type of mc. Even though Sydney isn't kick-butt in the same sense you could say Rose is she's still a strong heroine IMO. Great review!:)

Awww! My copy is STILL in the mail! Must not kill the mailman, must NOT kill the mailman. I hate it when I preorder and they come so late! I'm sure this will be a real swoon fest! I couldn't resist reading the spoiler, but then Mead made a comment a while back that made it pretty clear how things will go. :)
Great review, Rachel!

Rachel, I have this gut-feeling that this series isn't for me, even though I did like VA, but your reviews keep forcing me to think otherwise! I know I'd hate Sydrian though...I just know it, but I feel like I should give it a shot, regardless. Great review, dear! :)

I'm glad that this installment focuses less on Jill and Angeline. And Adrian sounds so protective over Sydney. *swoon* I think I'll love this. Thanks for sharing the quote, Rachel! I'm going to buy the book now :)

So I haven't read Bloodlines nor Vampire Academy. I know exactly what you're thinking:

"What is this girl DOING with her life?"

And the answer to that question is: school. Most of the time. But also reading other books, you know. But I have a copy of the first VA book AND Bloodlines (you'd think that would be a major motivation to read this series, including the hype, right?) so hopefully I will get to it soon. I'm actually planning to read VA as my first book for the Take Control of Your TBR Pile thing going on in March. So it WILL get read. Soon. Soon I shall join the fangirl mob.

But I'm glad you loved this one so much Rachel! <3 Hopefully the series will get even better for you as the books continue on!

Rachel! I'm so glad you loved this! I'm currently reading it and I'm absolutely enjoying myself. It looks like it might be a 5 stars read for me too. I was like you too. I loved Sydney from the beginning too. She was no Rose, but she was a likable character. Now, I like her even more. Mead really knows how to make her characters grow. And Adrian is so swoon-worthy!
Brilliant review, Rachel! :)

What a fun review! I am one of those whose been slow to warm up to Sydney, but I did like her a lot in TIS. I thought this was such a funny book, too! So glad you enjoyed it so much, Rachel.

Rachel. Let me tackle you with massive bear hugs for also loving Sydney from the beginning.

Like you, her social awkwardness is endearing and I love that she has such a sharp and analytical mind. It's not a heroine you read every day. I find her to be such a refreshing character.

I'm currently reading this and just swooning over Adrian and I am a diehard Sydrian fan. Those 2 are, like, my book babies, LOL.

Anywhoo, enough with my fangirling :D - Loved your review. Thanks for sharing! :)

I loved this one too, I've been hearing some not so good things but don't understand why! Your review reflects on everything I thought about the book. This was just full of so much Sydrian love!
