Crash (Visions #1) by Lisa McMann

Crash (Visions, #1)

Publication date: January 8th 2013
My rating:  3 stars

If what you see is what you get, Jules is in serious trouble. The suspenseful first of four books from the New York Times bestselling author of the Wake trilogy.

Jules lives with her family above their restaurant, which means she smells like pizza most of the time and drives their double-meatball-shaped food truck to school. It’s not a recipe for popularity, but she can handle that.

What she can’t handle is the recurring vision that haunts her. Over and over, Jules sees a careening truck hit a building and explode...and nine body bags in the snow.

The vision is everywhere—on billboards, television screens, windows—and she’s the only one who sees it. And the more she sees it, the more she sees. The vision is giving her clues, and soon Jules knows what she has to do. Because now she can see the face in one of the body bags, and it’s someone she knows. Someone she has been in love with for as long as she can remember.

In this riveting start to a gripping series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa McMann, Jules has to act—and act fast—to keep her vision from becoming reality.

My Thoughts:
Crash was a book I was really excited about.  I love mystery, suspense and action stories, especially if a little swoony romance is thrown in.  Crash was exactly that.

The Demarco’s and Angotti’s have been rivals for years. Each have an Italian Pizza restaurant and competition and old accusations keep the bitter rivalry going.  This isn’t good for Jules Demarco because ever since she can remember, she’s been in love with Sawyer Angotti.  They were once thick as thieves growing up, having all kinds of fun together.  This is when Jules longtime crush on Sawyer developed.  When their parents find out about their friendship they are not too pleased, and Sawyer drops Jules like a hot potato. So in the here and now, they both attend high school together, but Jules must content herself with pining from afar. *sniff*

I’d imagine us in Bulger Park on a blanket, ignoring the tree frogs and the pigeons and little crying kids. I’d touch his cheek and push his hair back, and he’d look at me with his gorgeous green eyes and that crooked, shy grin of his, and then he’d lean toward me and we’d both hold our breath without realizing it, and his lips would touch mine, and then…

Suddenly, Jules starts having a vision of a terrible crash involving the Angotti’s.  At first she thinks she’s going nuts, but as details become clearer Jules knows she has to warn Sawyer, because she couldn’t bear it if she didn’t speak up and she lost him for good. The visions amp up in intensity and in frequency and Jules wonders if there’s anything she can do to prevent a horrible tragedy from happening.

I really enjoyed this story.  It had twists and turns and was pleasantly entertaining.  Jules is a typical sixteen year-old, but she faces quite a few heartbreaking problems.  Her dad is a train wreck, and when I found out everything behind his story I was surprised and angry for the whole family. Selfish man!  The men in Sawyer’s family are no better, and I think everyone would be better off if they all just went away! Unrequited love is a romance that always gets to me, and this one was sweet.

Crash was an entertaining and fast read, but I can’t help but think that there was just a little something missing.  It was enjoyable but lacked the “wow” factor.  I will continue with the series because I want to know what happens.   There is a cliff, not a horrible one, just a more like a “to be continued…” sort of situation.  No worries, I have Bang on hand and plan to pick it soon!

I really wanted to read this one too and I have no idea why didn't I. Anyhow it sounds like a great read and the whole thing about rivalry sounds fun. I'm glad you enjoyed it Rachel. Great review :)

Fab review, Rachel. Sorry it didn't blow you away! I'd highly recommend the author's Wake Fade Gone Trilogy because it's absolutely EPIC and you might have better luck with it :) It has the mystery in it along with....I won't spoil it for you actually haha

I tend to read books but not really feel pleased with it- probably because they aren't really standing out from others or the wow factor like you mentioned.

Fantastic review, Rach! <33

So, liked it but didn't love it. Sounds like a good story (hum...I think I have this one on my Kindle...) and I do love Lisa McMann. A suspenseful mystery with a little romance might be just the ticket.

Oh, hey! Rachel, how are you liking Bone Crossed? I LOVE Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series!!

I've had my eyes on this book, but after reading your review, I think I might just skip it because I'd rather be reading amazing books than books that lack the wow factor. Jule's father seems like a piece of work. I can tell that he would frustrate me and make me seriously mad!
Lovely reivew, Rachel!

I'm a huge fan of Lisa and her books. Sad you didn't enjoy this as much as I have though. But I sometimes find her slight novels both a huge plus and a negative. There's just not enough like what you've mentioned.

Hopefully next one will be better, yeah? :)

I had this as one of my WoW's ages ago and I still haven't read it even though I have a copy. I wasn't really hoping for anything that would blow my mind really. I just really like the plotline of it and I can see how you related to that. Great review Rachel. :)

Rival pizza restaurants?! I'd like to see THAT! Hee. I like thrillers, though I had mixed feelings about the one book of hers I read. I'm glad you enjoyed this, though, and are looking forward to the sequel. :)

It's always a shame when that "BAM" factor is absent, but I'm really glad to see that you'll still be picking up the sequel, Rachel. I'm curious to see what you think of it and hope it improves as I'm interested in trying out this series for myself. Great review, as always, dear!

Oh, this pizza rivals thing reminds me of a movie that I can't remember. It was awfully cute and sweet:) Some of my favorite books have gotten 3 stars for the first book and I regret nothing since the rest of them have redeemed the first one. I love the sound of this. You're right, it sounds thrilling and I'm glad to know it was. My heart hurts for this love story even now, without having read it, but I can't way I'm not intrigued. Wonderful review, sweetie!

Unrequited love is sad and can be meaningful, and sure is exciting. Fantastic review!!!! I want to read about the rivalry pizza families and scary premotions. Even if its not out of the world special.

Although this wasn't a standout read for you, I'm glad you enjoyed this overall, Rachel. And I know what you mean about unrequited love in romance. It can be quite painful sometimes, but there's just something about it that makes it hard to turn away. Lovely review as always! :)

Hmm. I'm thinking that I will wait until at least book 2 to read these. Then I can see how the story progresses. Glad this was a good read for you overall, though. Interested in how this relationship works if Sawyer "dropped her like a hot potato" UH-OH.

Good review. I rated it the same because of that issue too, it wasn't 'wow'. But i'll still give the sequel a chance.

Love me some twists! But I totally understand about the something missing aspect. I hate reading a book and liking it, feeling for the characters....but then still it's not WOW. I'll still be wanting to read this though, great review! :)

I loved Wake, Rebekah, but I wished the author would have left the story at the first book because the next two were sort of disappointments for me. I loved Cryer's Cross by this author, though. Don't know if you tried that one yet. And thanks! :)

I actually finished Bone Crossed and I'm almost done with Silver Born. It's such an amazing series, Mary! I'm totally addicted. :)
