Review: Come Back to Me by Mila Gray

Come Back to Me by Mila Gray
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Publication date: June 19th 2014
My rating: 4 stars

Home on leave in sunny California, Marine and local lothario Kit Ryan finds himself dangerously drawn to his best friend's sister, Jessa - the one girl he can't have. But Kit's not about to let a few obstacles stand in his way and soon Jessa's falling for his irresistible charms. What starts out as a summer romance of secret hook-ups and magical first times quickly develops into a passionate love affair that turns both their worlds upside down. When summer's over and it's time for Kit to redeploy, neither Kit nor Jessa are ready to say goodbye. Jessa's finally following her dreams and Kit's discovered there's someone he'd sacrifice everything for. Jessa's prepared to wait for Kit no matter what. But when something more than distance and time rips them apart they're forced to decide whether what they have is really worth fighting for. A breathtaking, scorchingly hot story about love, friendship, family and finding your way back from the edge of heartbreak.

There are only a handful of New Adult books that I can say I truly enjoyed, I don’t know why but this genre and I really haven’t been able to click. So I’m always a little wary going into New Adult books, but when I first heard about Mila Gray (Sarah Alderson) deciding to step into this genre, I couldn’t wait to give this genre a try once more. Alderson has always guaranteed to bring the swoon, so I couldn’t wait to see her game with this book.

Jessa has liked her brother’s best friend Kit, but she knows he just probably sees her as his best friends little sister, also if he did see her more than that she’d know she was out of bounds because of her over protective brother. But things change when Kit comes back from Sudan for a couple of weeks, there seems to be a spark between Jessa and Kit and one which both seem to notice and for once it seems like both want to make the most despite the consequences. I was glad Kit and Jessa both decided to finally take a chance with each other, it was clear that they both had strong feelings for one another, which they’d been holding back on for a long time, and they were afraid of getting caught especially by Jessa’s dad who’d never been a huge fan of Kit for some reason to begin with. But I always seem to enjoy books which have characters in a relationship sneaking around, I know it’s not one of the healthiest things and things could hit the fan afterwards, but the secret meet ups between Jessa and Kit was a lot of fun to watch.

I liked how Gray decided to give us this story too, we’re given snippets at the beginning of bad news, but we don’t know the complete story, we’re then thrown into the past, slowly building up to the present day, the whole time we’re on tenterhooks dreading what the bad news could be. I kind of had a feeling early on which way things would go, but despite knowing this, I was hoping that things could change some way. Also the beautiful story and relationship that Gray gave us between not only Jessa and Kit but Jessa’s brother Riley and his girlfriend made me dread the build up to the bad news even more.

Come Back to Me, really was a gorgeous but heart breaking read, I loved watching the relationship between Jessa and Kit develop, it really was one of those relationships that only comes around once in a while, but ends up leaving a huge imprint. Mila Gray has definitely gone on to show that she can deliver both solid reads as a YA and New Adult author. I for one can’t wait to read more from her if she decides to delve into this genre once more.

Ooo I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, I have it for review. NA is so hit and miss for me too so it's always a joy to come across a good one.

Eeep! Danielle loved this story as well and I'm so glad that a NA book worked for you :) "But I always seem to enjoy books which have characters in a relationship sneaking around" Bhahaha. Me too! It makes things so much more exciting, you know? ;) I don't really like these stories where you have to wonder what happened and such (unless it is a mystery book), because usually it's always the same thing and there isn't that big of a surprise there. However, I'm still highly anticipating on reading this one :) So there's basically two relationships? Whoop! Gimme, gimme, gimme! So happy to hear that you enjoyed, love!

Well, secret meet-ups are great because it's the whole forbidden/adrenaline rush thing! So totally understandable, IF someone frowned upon in the clear light of day. ;) Sounds like an engrossing story--it's rare to find NA that explores relationships with any degree of depth, so I'm glad this one worked well for you!

I know if Sarah Alderson is writing New Adult, I might actually enjoy it. The premises for this romance reminds me a bit of Lila and Alex without the paranormal difficulties, so I'm definitely looking forward to picking this one up. So glad you enjoyed it, Jasprit, and fantastic review! :)

How did I not know about this book Jasprit! I'm so out of the Sarah Alderson loop. I couldn't be happier that you posted this review today though, otherwise I never would have known she was writing NA under Mila Gray. I've definitely struggled with the NA genre as well, finding a few hits and a whole lot of misses, so I'm excited to see what Sarah does with this one. Glad to see a 4 star rating from you!

I got this one today after seeing so many people loving it, Jasprit. I'm so glad this NA book worked for you. I'm really excited to get to it myself. Also, I'm very curious about the big secret and the romance has one of my favorite tropes.
Wonderful review, Jasprit! :)

Well there are only a handful of NA books I enjoyed too, so I'm really curious about this one now. I haven't read that other series by this author but I have heard nothing but great things about her writing. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Jasprit :)

I've had the same issue with NA. Why?!? It makes it really hard to pick up another book in this category, when they're all kind of the same and I have issues... *sigh* It's good to hear this one's a nice, solid read and really delivered for you, though!

This book keeps calling to me, but I don't have the time to add it to my schedule at this moment. I'm so happy you've found a New Adult to enjoy, Jasprit!

I know right? I don't have muck luck when it comes to NA but there is another NA coming out this year I have high expectations for (I Want It That Way). Anyway, I guess I don't have completely bad luck with NA because I do try to read books I have more chances of liking so it usually works out for me.

I am so glad to see you loved this and I am not very happy about the mention of a certain someone because I just finished the book and the scars are still raw... I think I need to eat something sweet now .-.

Fantastic review, Jasprit!!! (AS ALWAYS)

I am so happy to see that you liked this one, Jasprit. I should be reading it soon, and your review has me eager to dive in now. I can only think of a handful of NA titles that have really worked for me too, but I hope I'll be able to add Come Back to Me to the small list. :)

I totally understand the back and forth relationship with the NA genre, Jasprit! So to hear that this NA read was actually worth the while makes me very happy and eager to get it in my hands and read it. I love that this has a sneaking around type of romance too! That has got to be nothing but fun. I'm looking forward to meeting both Kit and Jessa! Glad you enjoyed this, Jasprit! Great review! :D

I've gotten so wary of NA these days, but I love Sarah Alderson - you are right, she excels at swoon - and I've seen several people loving this book. With you being one of them, I know I need to give this a shot. Great review!
