The Readers Den Weekly Wrap Up #6

Hi everyone, with Rachel and I's crazy work schedules, we miss sharing whats going on with us. We used to have a lot of fun with our Showcase Sunday posts, so thought we'd do something regular on the blog, where we share bookish news and life news in general as a weekly recap!

WHAT I READ/REVIEWED

Jasprit

A mixed reading week for me this week, books I was expecting to enjoy I didn't end up liking them and one book I really ended up liking. However all of the above didn't get more than 3 star ratings from me :(

I haven't reviewed much on the blog lately, partly because I'm too lazy lately to write a full on review for some of the books I've finished and partly because I've be on a re-reading (listening to the audio books) binge of the Mercy Thompson series! I'm almost done with Fire Touched now and then I'm re-reading Silence Fallen. I love this series even more after the 2nd time around! On Second Thought, The Rosie Project, and One Fell Sweep were wonderful, even though I wish there was more at the end for the respective romances in On Second Thought. Everything You Want Me to Be was entertaining, but predictable, and I didn't like the sad feeling I had in the end. Can't just one of these psychological thrillers have a good (romantic) ending?!

BOOKS RECEIVED

Jasprit
(Click on Book for Goodreads link).

I'm hoping The Names they Gave Us will finally be a winner of a book for me from Lord, the reviews for this book from friends have been fantastic so far. And I saw Nick reading a copy of Hate to want You and I knew I needed to get a copy asap!

NEW TO MY TBR

Jasprit

When I first heard about The Girl Before I was super excited about reading it, it sounded like something that I would enjoy, but I'm like number 20 in the holds line at the library, and since then more and more mixed reviews keep coming in, so whilst my excitement might have died down a bit, I still can't wait to read this book.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

Jasprit

Season 2 of Jane the Virgin is finally on Netflix, whilst I haven't been able to binge watch the episodes as I'd like to, I'm super happy to return to these characters once more.

Rachel:

It doesn't stay completely true to the book, but I'm enjoying it anyhow. The scenery is beautiful which is a perk. I live about 5 hours south of Big Sur and Monterey, and it really is that beautiful.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK

Jasprit:

I've finally been on top of my fitness these last few weeks, I've been able to go to at least two circuits classes a week and a visit to the gym too. I just wish I could have been a bit more better at controlling my eating though, I can never resist scarfing Doritos chilli heat wave or some chocolates! And I've been loving all the pretty flowers in bloom, I'm excited about using a lot more of these in my bookstagram photos.

My bookstagram account can be found here.

Rachel:
I've got back into running which is good because I've been eating the same amount of calories even when I had to take a break because I kept getting sick.  I'm not happy with what has resulted in my body, and hope to shed the extra pounds soon, because I'm going to Stage Coach, a country music festival later this month and during the day we lay out by the hotel pool!  Ack! I'm going to have to cut back calories in addition to running.
I've been working a lot and doing some home improvement as well.

How was your week?

Good job on the fitness for both of you! Rachel - it's definitely difficult, but don't pressure yourself too much! I'm focusing a lot on the food at the moment, but eventually I need to do more fitness things. I need it to warm up just a bit more, and then I can hopefully get outside and walk more!

I really want to read Strange the Dreamer; hopefully I can get a copy sometime soon.

I own The Rosie Project so hopefully I can read that one soon too. I'm doing an April ARC Readathon, so hopefully by May I'll have more room for books I own.

I've been really liking Big Little Lies, and will be sorry to see it go. I was initially bummed they changed the setting from Australia but I have to say the Monterey area is beautiful, so they didn't miss a beat there! And I agree- even with the changes, it's been pretty good.

The End of our Story looks nice with that cover, I'll have to look up that one. And I need to get moving on Mercy Thompson, I've read the first book and need to get on with the rest!

I've been kind of eyeing The Girl Before as well. and Girl in the Mirror looks good- I love the sound of the twist, and those missing memories stories always seem to draw me in. :)

Jasprit - I'm sorry your books have been duds lately. There's nothing worse than being excited for books that don't live up to your expectations. I've not had a lot of awesome reads so far this year and it's disappointing! I am excited to read the Emery Lord book - I hope it's good! And I keep hearing The Girl Before it good - it's on my list, too. Great job getting back into your fitness! I've been having a hard time staying away from Dove Dark Chocolates. They are my weakness!

Rachel - I hope you're feeling better - and yay for getting back into running! I was in the same boat last week - fighting a sinus infection (finally got on an antibiotic) and on my cycle = not much running. And when I'm sick, I have to eat more because of the sinus drainage messing up my stomach. I've gained a few lbs since we went on vacation that I'm hoping to work off now that I'm feeling better. I need to up my stepping game!
I'm so glad you liked On Second Thought. I adored that book so much. I want to read Never Let You Go soon, and I'm so excited for Serenity Harbor. I love that author's books! I need to watch Big Little Lies soon, too. I keep hearing how good it is.

Have a great week, ladies!!

Awww man, Jasprit, does that mean you didn't enjoy Strange the Dreamer? *cries* I must say, the first half was slow, but the second half of the book worked better for me. Hopefully you'll still read book though?

Also, Jasprit, that photo is GORGEOUS.

Rachel, good to hear about your running! I'm glad you're feeling better and getting back into the swing of things.

Have a lovely week, ladies! =)

Oh man, I've been looking forward to reading those books you didn't like that much, Jasprit. Such a bummer they didn't work out for you as much as you hoped. I haven't seen this cover for The Names They Gave Us before but I really like it as much as the US one! Big Little Lies looks really good. Sadly I don't have HBO *cries*

I was disappointed by the location change, too! I would've liked an all Aussie cast like the book as well. Still, like you said, even with the changes it was pretty good. :)

I'm so happy to be feeling better, Brandie! It sucks being sick! I'm happy to hear you're on the mend, too. :) That inactivity gets me down.

Me too! I'm eager to pick up The Perfect Match by Kristen Higgens after enjoying On Second Thought.

That's too bad about Strange the Dreamer but I've been hearing mediocre things from a lot of people! Maybe we all have/had incredibly high expectations. :)

I'm also really enjoying Big Little Lies although I'm super far behind. I'm enjoying it more than the book though!

Rachel, now that I’ve had my first taste of Ilona Andrew’s writing I’m really looking to read another series by this team. Hopefully I’ll have more reading time in summer. Sad or bittersweet romance is one of the reasons I don’t read a lot of psychological thrillers. I’m still on the fence about Big Little Lies. I’m usually full of critique when it comes to adaptations of my favorite books. Have a good time at this country music festival!

Jasprit, sorry to hear all this books were just so so for you, but at least you had one good. And I’m looking forward to read Lord’s latest book too, if only I had more reading time…
