Review & Giveaway: Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal (Lux, #3)

Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Publication date: December 11th 2012
My rating:  4.5 stars

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

Opal was all kinds of AWESOME until I clicked the last page and was left off on the WORST CLIFFHANGER EVER!  Ahhhhhh!!!!!! A plaque must be made saying Jennifer L. Armentrout is the Queen of Cliffhangers!  Seriously, first Deity and now this?!! You’re killing me Jennifer.  Even with a cliffhanger I could easily get violent over, I’m still 100% addicted to this series.  I LOVE it!  There wasn’t a dull moment.

’m not going to summarize Opal, because I’m sure most of you have read many, many reviews already and basically know what’s going on at this point. I will say that in the last book, Onyx, Katy drove me nuts with her rash and stupid decisions, and lack of communication.  She paid dearly, and did learn her lesson before the story was over, but not before there were tragic consequences.  THANKFULLY, Katy is back to her lovable self, and I only wanted to strangle her a couple of times.

Daemon is one of my favorite book boyfriends.  HOT, snarky, sexy and protective.  I’m dying and swooning over here.  Yes, his snark was completely toned down but he still had his fun ornery side to spice things up.  Loved this quote:

Dazed, I stared up at him. “What was that for?”

“You haven’t been smiling much. I missed it, so I decided to reward you for doing it.” “Reward me?” I laughed. “God, only you would think kissing someone is a reward.”

“You know it is.  My lips change lives, baby.”

I also loved it every time Daemon called Katy: Kitten.  Or when he called Blake everything but: Biff, Barf, and Bart, you name it.  He was the star of the show, IMO.  Daemon and Katy are closer than ever, and I loved seeing their relationship with out unnecessary drama.

With all the events that happened in the last book I knew there would be damage to Dee and Katy’s relationship.   All the screwed up reasoning and blunders Katy made in the last book did result in one positive thing though, Dawson.  He’s back, but a shell of a man knowing that his Beth is still captive. He’s escaped but his main focus is getting Beth back, and Katy and Daemon realize they can’t stop him.  Most of the focus in this installment is on the team planning to get Beth back.  Daemon is not thrilled with this idea, but knows if the tables were turned, he would do anything to get Katy back, so he wants to help his brother.  I had a knot in my stomach just thinking about this.  We had a taste of captivity in the last book and that was sheer torture, literally!

While JLA killed me with yet another cliffhanger, I’m still sooo addicted to this series.  I do feel the cliffhanger was completely unnecessary.  I’m already invested enough to pick up the next one without being motivated by a cliffhanger.  I think most people who love this series feel the same way.   At least we don’t have to wait a full year for Origin.  It will be out July 2013.

We’ve decided to give one of our awesome readers a copy print copy of Opal.  Just fill out the rafflecopter below.  The giveaway is INTERNATIONAL, as long as The Book Depository ships to your country.  For a list of countries please click here.  The only requirement is that you follow the blog.

First of all, thank you for the giveaway and thank you for making it international.
Second, everyone cries over the ending and I am kind of scared to start Opal. I know that every time I read something by JLA I just can't get into any other books too soon.
I am afraid that I might fall into a deep depression... LOL
Anyway, thank you for the giveaway I am still eager to read it. (^_^)

Thanks so much for the fabulous international giveaway, Rachel! :) I've been dying to read Opal for so long now and your amazing, glowing review makes me want it even more! Oh god, Daemon. He's honestly one of the baddest, hottest, snarkiest book hotties out there and I can't wait to meet him again. <3 By your review, he seems exactly the same guy we all fell in love with in the first two books. :') Ohnononononononononono! ANOTHER cliffhanger? Shit! I mean, I'm still going to read Opal, obviously, but I'm going to take my own sweet time... trying to stay away from the ending as long as humanly possible. ;) Lovely review, Rachel and thanks so much for the giveaway guys! :D

I've heard that JLA's cliffhangers are the worst! I've read Obsidian but I still have Onyx to read, hoping to get to it soon! Thanks so much for the fab giveaway!

Great review, Rachel. I'm so glad to hear that Katy doesn't make as much stupid rash decisions in this book as in Onyx. She drove me crazy in that book too. Also, so happy to hear that Daemon is sweeter but still has his snarky side. That's the perfect combination! ;) I've heard about the cliffhanger in this one, so I'm a little wary of whether I want to start it or if I should just wait for Origin!
Lovely review, Rachel! :)

Great review! Haha, Daemon's names for Blake made my day over and over again. I'm glad JLA continued with that trend through the two novels XD Oh my GAWSH, that ending! I just sat in bed and cried, because I'm a pathetic loser. I don't think it was unnecessary, purely because it made me feel so many emotions!

Great review! I loved this book too! But that cliffhanger really is a killer. Although its driving me nuts I don't think it was unnecessary. I think it really sets the tone and plot for the next book and I had a feeling something crazy like that was going to be the end. Idk maybe I've just finally come to terms with it haha! Glad you enjoyed Opal as much as I did.

This book, no I mean this series, is still on my TBR list and I seriously need to read them! They seem amazing... and I have a feeling I'm the only one who hasn't read the series, which is deeply depressing! :/ I WILL GET TO THIS SERIES! :D Lovely review Rachel! :)

Oh man. This one has a cliffhanger too? She is wicked with those! I almost died after Deity, so I'm not sure I can handle the cliffhanger for this one. I think, for the purposes of my sanity, I need to wait until the next book is out before I get caught up with Daemon and Katy. I still entered the giveaway though:) Thanks so much for the chance to win!

I've never seen you use caps this much in a review. I agree with you, though, this was pretty much a thrill ride, and that god-awful cliffhanger was entirely unnecessary.
GReat review, Rachel, and thanks for the giveaway!

Rachel, I absolutely agree! I definitely think this was more Daemon's book - the one where he shone - more than the other two, simply because he finally had Katy now and kept continuously proving that he deserved her. I just adored their relationship and in this one and JLA was so clever to make the entire novel a giant foreshadowing of the ending. Gosh, I just need Origin...NOW! Wonderful review, dear! :)

Ok, so MAYBE it's time for me to pick this series up? Maybe? The buzz around this series in general is just incredible, and Daemon sounds really snarky, which I always love. I'll have to be buying a copy of this one ASAP, since it seems like you almost died over this one Rachel! ;)

Fantastic review. <3

What is it with books and cliffhangers?? Seriously. Very, VERY irritating, especially when the next book in the series will be released ages away. (I'm scowling at you, Unspoken!) And I still have to read Obsidian... I know. I'm either the Queen of Procrastination or there's something pulling me back from reading it..
Excellent review Rachel!

Me too... I'm addicted to the series :)

Ack! Daemon is like that bad boy that you know is soooo bad for you and yet you can't say no to. Sigh. I'm afraid I haven't got the balls to jump into this series yet until the bitter end. I shall wait then. :)

I know, Maja, lol! I wrote this right after I finished and I was a little ticked and emotional. Next time I should let some time pass before I review. :)

Rachel said...

Probably a good idea, Jenny. There are so many other books to occupy until then. :)

Heehee, I guess I got a little carried away with the caps. That's what happens when your right a review RIGHT AFTER you finish a book with a violence inducing cliffhanger! There I go again, lol. :)
