Author Event Recap & Giveaway: Maggie Stiefvater

Last Tuesday I (Rachel) had the pleasure of attending an author event for Maggie Stiefvater at One Upon a Time Bookstore in Montrose, California. As always she was lively and very entertaining.  Maggie led off with questions she asked the first time I saw her back in 2011: How many have ever seen me speak? How many have read...(this time Sinner)? How many of you have read any of my other books? How many of you have no idea who I am or why I'm here but saw a line going past the cafe?  The first time she asked this my husband, who attended with me raised his hand at that last question and I wanted to crawl under my chair! Lol! Anyways, thankfully, he didn't raise his hand this time!
Maggie signing the custom Sinner book cover

Even though Maggie hadn't planned on writing any more books in the WofMF series, she explained how Sinner came about with this line: "I am a werewolf in Los Angeles".  She said she thought if I
ever decided to revisit that world, that would be a killer opening line. She was deep into working on The Raven Cycle series which has very little *read: none* kissing because of Blue's curse, and when she thought of that line and the possible story, Maggie thought: that sounds like a kissing book! And Sinner was born.

From there we heard stories of her college days in an Irish Celtic "rock band" (haha!). She was the bad ass chick playing the bag pipes!  And she regaled us of how she hated Los Angeles the first time she visited and then loved it the second time for the very same reasons, thus contributing to Sinner's setting.

Being the last tour stop, there was a very special giveaway: a personalized electric guitar!  Also, she made custom book wrappers for Sinner and signed them for us! They are beautiful and evidence of Maggie's many artistic talents!

Custom book cover for Sinner

It was a fun night, I laughed so many times! Maggie is one of the most entertaining authors to see in person I've met.

As usual I like to bring something back to share with one of our readers and I have a SIGNED hardcopy of Sinner to giveaway to one Readers Den follower. The giveaway is restricted to US Residents.  Simply fill out the rafflecopter below for a chance to win.

I have no doubt that she's absolutely amazing in person! I have to say I envy you a little bit, Rachel. Fine, a lot. This was her event only? I know she was traveling with Brenna Yovanoff and Tessa Gratton, so I figured they'd be there as well. :)
I'm so happy that you were able to attend. At least I live vicariously through you.

Hhahhah lol XD This is such an awesome post, Rachel! I saw that you often go to book events; that's so cool! I wish we had more in Québec but we only got...one. In November. :P Anyway, that cover art is so amazing. *.* You must've had the best of days. ^^

Hehe! The fact that your husband raised his hand the last time made me snort. At least your husband goes with you! I can't talk Kevin into going to any author events with me, but his mom makes up for his absence. She's always up for a signing!

That custom book cover is GORGEOUS! As is the guitar. What an amazing giveaway that was!

The Raven Boys series is incredible and soul-consuming, so I'd say that's my favorite of hers. I have a soft spot for Sam in Shiver, though. I just love that guy to pieces...

I still like Lament.

It's certainly interesting that working on The Raven Cycle led to Sinner being born. I've wanted to meet Stiefvater for quite some time now so hopefully I'll get a chance to see her someday. Wonderful recap!(:

I haven't read much by Maggie yet, but I guess I'd say Shiver at the moment. I wish I could draw as well as she does; super artistic, that one!

I really loved this series, and think maybe Shiver is still my favorite. Maggie seems like such a fun author to attend, and she's obviously even more talented that I'd thought. I'm glad you had a nice time!

I love reading about author events mostly because I'll never meet any of them in near future.

I can't decide between Sinner and The Dream Thieves. Maggie seems to be writing better and better with each book.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA @ your husband. He's honest. I like that :D KISSING YES. I want Blue and Gansey (waves her team Gansey flag) to have a good ole makeout session because that needs to happen. I NEED IT OKAY. Without him dying ofc. Ohhhhh I just love how talented Maggie is :) and those dust jackets are the bomb! I totally drooled over them when she tweeted about leaving them in some random bookstore. Thanks for the cute recap, Rachel :)

It's so awesome you got to see Maggie again, Rachel! She's quite the character, I love that she plays with her readers, and it's so generous of her to do these events and make all this artwork and give away these guitars, too. I haven't finished SINNER yet, but it's cool to hear her talk about how it came to be--and you can really see her love/hate for our city in the book. Which is sometimes hard to take, but at least it's coming from the perspective of someone who's spent some time here and thought about the city on a level that's not superficial, if you know what I mean.

My favorite Maggie Stiefvater book is Linger! :)

They were there, Maja, and I was annoyed I didn't check out the event more carefully because I didn't bring my Tessa Gratton books to be signed! I had my Brenna books already signed at another event at least.

Rachel said...

I know, I am very lucky he goes with me! It's nice you have family members who share your love of books, Jenny. :)

Rachel said...

He probably would've raised his hand this time AGAIN, if he hadn't read a bunch of Maggie's books since then, lol! :)

Rachel said...

I know, Siiri, he's a laugh a minute *insert eye roll*! And YES I'm a Gansey girl too and kissing MUST happen in the next book...or else!! :)
