https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13641105-parasite

A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite - a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system - even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives...and will do anything to get them.

My Thoughts:
I was looking forward to this story, but unfortunately it just didn't work for me. Instead of feeling horror at events described (which I think is what the author was going for) I was just bored. Probably doesn't help that there's frequent info dumping in between actual plot progression.

Also, the story felt very similar to the Feed/Newsflesh series which I liked overall, but not enough to read/listen to another 500+ pages worth. I had just read *listened* to the Newsflesh series over the last two months, so maybe the close time between reads made the similarities stand out more to me. Others may not have the same issue.

I'm not going to rate this because even though I did read 85 pages that's still only 17% of this book.

There are a whole host of 4-5 star reviews out there for this story so don't just take my word for it.  Check out a couple of my bloggy friends reviews before deciding: Maja @The Nocturnal Library and  Melanie @YA Midnight Reads.

I thought I'd pass my ARC copy onto someone who will enjoy this more than I did.  Why should it languish sadly on my bookshelf?  Simply fill out the rafflecopter for a chance to win.  US Residents only.

It's so sad when a book you want to like ends up being disappointing, but I appreciate that you were able to stop reading and move on when it wasn't working. This cover and concept freaks me out, so I've avoided it because of that. BUT it's even sadder knowing that it bored you instead of setting you on edge. Hope your next read is a hit!

Good of you to be honest and pass it on. Sometimes you just get tired of a specific genre and the info dumping just gets to you. I haven't read the Feed trilogy but I'm planning to . I;ll get around to it soon,I think

I wasn't sure if I liked this one or not...still. I read the whole thing (very slowly). In fact the first part of my review was: I keep going back and forth on whether I really liked Parasite or I was incredibly creeped/grossed out by it. A lot of it seemed really repetitive too and it could have been way less than 500 pages long.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy this one. I am interested to read it -- but info dumps can be so annoying.

You know, I totally understand. This one did spark my interest but I haven't read her Newsflesh series so maybe that's why I liked it more. Cool that you're giving away your ARC -- hopefully, it'll find its way into someone's hands who will love it!

I'm sorry you couldn't get through with this book. I know Mira Grant has such a cult following but I haven't really experience it for myself. Info dump is such a necessary evil sometimes. I can see why it's a killer though.

Good luck with your next read, Rachel!

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy this book as much, Rachel. I have to say that I have been intrigued especially with all these praising reviews but info dumping does not appeal to me.
Thanks for the honest review, Rachel!

I am sorry you didn't enjoy this book Rachel :(
I haven't completely made up my mind about reading this series because... parasites *shudders*. The thought of them is enough to give me nightmares and I am not sure I would be able to read the book without freaking out .-. But I do want to try her Newsflesh series..

Hopefully you'll find something amazing to read soon! :)

Thanks for the honest review!!

I've definitely heard that this book doesn't compare to Grant's first series, so I'm going to finish up that trilogy before looking to this. I suspect is have some if the same difficulties as you, Rachel. Lovely review and thanks for your honesty!(:

I still havent' read this one, and I have a copy. I havent' read her other series so I think it will work better for me, but I have heard other readers say the same thing that it is too similar to her first series.

Aw, sorry this one didn't work out for you! Honestly, this is one big book and for that reason alone, I don't think I'm going to read it. :P There are a lot of books that I think would be great with 500+/600+ pages, but this is probably not one of them. ._.

Awwww I'm sorry this wasn't an enjoyable read for you, and that it was a DNF. And the synopsis sounded really interesting too. :( I love me some chunksters, but I would not read a book this long if it cannot keep my attention. I want to read something by her, but maybe I'll just try out Feed. Great review and thanks for the giveaway :)

Sorry you didn't like this one! It might be a case of "too similar too soon" but hey, not every book by an author will be for everyone. I do want to read her adult trilogy though.

Awww, I'm saddened you didn't like this one as much, Rachel. I really enjoyed this one as it made me gasp and shudder and afraid of worms, but I totallyunderstand where you are coming from. There are times the details and science info-dumping can be a bit overwhelming. I didn't realize this was similar to Feed! I guess that's to be expected, though, given both are sci-fi ish. Hope your next read is better :)

Aw, I'm so sorry you didn't manage to finish this book sweetie. It sucks when a book you wanted to be awesome just wasn't that good :\ I have not wanted to read this book, to be honest, hih (A) and now I won't. Thank you so much for sharing and being honest. <3 :)

I'm sorry it wasn't for you, I heard a lot of different things about it and I still don't know what to do about it but I'm curious because I love everything she writes under the Seanan Mcguire name.

Oh noes. Info dumping is the worst. And yeah, even flinchingly bad books are better than ones that just make you...bored. Thanks for the honest review :)

Oh, I'm sorry this didn't work for you, Rachel! I've heard good things otherwise, but at the same time in a way I'm glad to see a sort of balance. I hope you're reading something you enjoy after that. :)

It's always a bummer when you're reading something you wanted to like and it's just not turning out that way. Sorry to hear about it. Thank you for the honest review.

I haven't read their other series. But I play Plague, Inc. and this sounds sort of similar to it, so I think I might like it.
