End of Year Book Survey.

Hello everyone, 2013 has been a wonderful reading year for both Rachel and I, we discovered several new beautiful reads, read books which kept us up until the early hours and had some books that we just wanted to drop everything for, so that we could stay at home all day long and read. We thought the perfect way to recap our reading year was to take part in Jamie from The Perpetual Page Turner's 2013 End of Year Book Survey!

Jasprit: The Bride Wore Size 12 by Meg Cabot. I love this series so much, and I'm so sad that it's come to an end, I think I will need a definite re-read of the entire series next year.

14. Book that you can't believe you waited until 2013 to read?
Jasprit: Angelfall by Susan Ee. I remember all the hype that was surrounding this book when it was first released. Me being the wary reader I was decided to not jump onto the bandwagon straight away. Two years later when I finally gave this book I was simply blown away.

Rachel: Stolen by Lucy Christopher. I've always been afraid to pick it up, but I ended up loving it. I would like to see what happens years later, though!

15. Favourite passage/quote from a book you read in 2013?
Jasprit: “This book is a treasure; I did not suspect it would be so good when I picked it up, but now I can feel the printed words seeping through my skin and into my veins, rushing to my heart and marking it forever. I want to savour this wonder, this happening of a loving book and reading it for the first time, because the first time is always the best, and I will never read this book for the first time again”  If He Had Been with Me by Laura Nowlin

Rachel: He wanted to find that one person and just give her all of him, his heart, his head, his body. Jasprit: Longest: You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning (560 pages)
Shortest: Lila and Alex Short story. X-rated by Sarah Alderson (13 pages).

Rachel: Longest:The Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare (570 pages) 
Shortest: Curran: Magic Strikes Hot Tub Scene (18 pages)

17. Book that had a scene in it that had you reeling and dying to talk to somebody about it?
Jasprit: There's actually two books that come to mind. First is The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa. First of all how insane was this book and then we were left with this cruel ending. And then there was Fire with Fire by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian. This totally messed with my feelings. And now there's year long waits for the next books :(

Rachel: Two books: Left Drowning by Jessica Park. I got to a scene where a character does something that ticked me off SO BAD I had to text three of my friends immediately! Long ranty texts followed with back and forth for quite sometime. Still ticks me off to think about it!! Also, Dirty Red by Tarryn Fisher. After I finished I wanted to jump up and down over all the revelations!! I read this with my book friend, Arlene and my husband, but Arlene and I finished first.  We had to keep whispering in corners (we were at the Mid-Winter ALA together) about everything because my husband would've literally (maybe, lol!) killed us if we spoiled anything.

18. Favourite relationship from a book you read in 2013?
Jasprit: Warden and Paige's relationship in The Bone Season. I loved how I didn't really know what I would be getting, but the development was a great one.

Rachel: Dominique and Jaime in The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand.  They were both tender and bruised souls in need of the love each other provided. So very lovely!

Jasprit: You Look Different in Real Life by Jennifer Castle. This book definitely deserves so much praise, it was different to what I was expecting, but also provided us with a great journey with the characters.

Rachel: All the Truth That's In Me by Julie Berry. The story was surprisingly good with a romance filled with longing and a mystery that kept you guessing. The second personal narrative made it stand out for me even more!

1. New favourite blog you discovered in 2013.

Jasprit: Lauren Love is not a Triangle, Siiri at Little Pieces of Imagination.

2. Best event you participated in?

Jasprit: I was actually able to attend some incredible author events this year. Including meeting Sarah J. Maas, Samantha Shannon, Leila Sales and Sarra Manning.

Rachel: I'm pretty fortunate as a lot of authors blow through the Los Angeles area, so I was lucky enough to see Richelle Mead again for the release of Gameboard of the Gods, which was all kinds of fun. The Summer Lovin' Tour  featuring Sarah Ockler, Jessi Kirby, Morgan Matson, Shannon Messenger, Kimberly Derting, and Suzanne Young back in May of this year was a laugh a minute! I got beaned in the head by candy (thrown by said authors) for answering book questions correctly. What more could you want from a signing?!

3. Best moment of book blogging/ your book life in 2013?

Jasprit: Having some of of my favourite authors acknowledge a review I've written of one of their books.

And getting to know some really fabulous and generous authors and bloggers. A special shout out to Sarah Alderson, Sam, Maja, Siiri, Nick, Jenny, Jess and Melissa. (Sorry if I've forgotten anyone else).

Rachel: Going to the Mid-Winter ALA in Seattle and then the main event ALA in Chicago were both super fun! Kid in a candy store, I tell you! Also, I got to hang out with some of my best book friends and all we did was gossip books *heaven*.  Having a quote from my review listed in a couple of books was awfully nice as well!  Interacting with our awesome bloggy friends, as Jasprit mentioned above is always a highlight to me! My go to girls: Jenny, Andrea, Keertana, Maja, Siiri, Glass, Tanja, Nick, Sam, and Aman.  I always know I'm going to have a laugh, and add way too many books to my TBR when I visit their sites! But also, weed some out through their helpful and insightful comments and reviews.

Jasprit: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty. I've lost count from the number of times I've been planning to read this book and just not got around to it. 2014 for sure!

Rachel: Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) by Tahereh Mafi, although, I may have to hurt someone upon finishing depending on how the love triangle resolves *sigh*, Oblivion (Nevermore #3) by Kelly Creagh, Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins: This is another one I'm nervous about. All the date extensions make me a little nervous.

After reading Graceling in just a few days, I knew immediately (actually on the day I started reading Graceling) that I needed the rest of the books in my life. Knowing when I'll get time to read them is a whole another story, but at least I know I can dive straight in when I'm not feeling a book. The lovely Jess from Jess Hearts Books sent me a copy of Where the Stars Still Shine for Christmas, I have read gorgeous reviews for this book, so look forward to reading this with Jess in the new year. Colour me surprised when I got accepted for a copy of We Were Liars, I'd decided to request a copy thinking I'd just get a rejection email in the next few days, but instead have this lovely to look forward to (this has a 4.25 average from my Goodreads friends already and its not set for release until May!), consider me a very happy girl! My Name is Memory was the last book I read by Brashares and I absolutely loved it, so once again I was thrilled to be accepted for another book by her.

Hello everyone, my sister is finally back with another interpretation of a YA book cover. So without further ado, the book my sister picked out was...

I think Twinmaker is about a man who makes a machine to go back in time, but it ends up making twins instead. The twin that comes out of the machine is different, they're evil and improved. They also try to get rid of the original human. As you can see in the picture the new and improved twin is smiling because it is evil. 

My sister had quite a few different interpretations of Twinmaker, but this is the final one that she stuck with. I actually quite what she's come up with. I started Twinmaker the other day and it's not really the read that I was hoping it would be so far. But my sister's interpretation also slightly reminds me of All Our Yesterdays. 

Bookish Survey: Cast a Harry Potter Spell: Part Two.

Cast a Harry Potter Spell was created by Jasmine at Flip That Page. I love taking parts in bookish surveys and when I first read this post over at Mel at The Daily Prophecy I knew that I had to take part too.

So what is this survey about? Basically, it’s a survey of sorts, where I give you a certain spell from the Harry Potter series, and you answer with the title of a book you’d like to cast the spell on.

A book with a chapter you couldn't seem to get over: Chapter 62 in Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi. Oh my gosh, I thought I had loved a certain character, but after this I was utterly convinced. I have lost count of the number of times I have re-read this chapter.

A book that generally confused you: Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass. I actually read this book with Keertana from Ivy Book Bindings. It did take me sometime to get my head around what was going on, but I think I would have been more confused had I read the book on my own!

A book that was a pain to read: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris. I really loved this series at the beginning, but the books have become harder and harder to read since. And this book was utterly pointless.

A book that left you speechless after you read it: Fire with Fire by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian. This was one of the best follow up books that I have read this year. It totally changed my feelings about certain characters and that ending!!!

A book with well-developed characters: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. The characters that Laini has created are simply amazing, I thought they were well fleshed out in this book, but they bring even more in Days of Blood and Starlight.

A book that changed your mind about a character from its prequel: Queen of Babble in the Big City and Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg Cabot. I had started off with a favourite in the first Queen of Babble book, but as the series progressed this character dramatically changed, which I was left a little heartbroken over. But then another character came through for me, but whenever I go back to read this series, I'm still always a little upset over these change of events.

A book that made you explode with the feels: The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa. This book, I think I'm still on a bit of a high after everything I was put through, but also my heart still hasn't fully recovered.

Review: Roomies by Sara Zarr & Tara Altebrando

It's time to meet your new roomie. When East Coast native Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment, she shoots off an e-mail to coordinate the basics: television, microwave, mini-fridge. That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl's summer -- and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room. As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they've never met.

This year has certainly been the case where books which I’ve had high hopes for have ended up being somewhat disappointing and books which I’ve picked up on a whim have ended up surprising me the most. This was exactly the case with Roomies, I decided to pick it up one day, thinking I’d read a couple of chapters, but ended up staying late totally absorbed by our two main characters Lauren and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth and Lauren ended up being assigned as roommates at college, Lauren had requested a single room, so is none too pleased about this arrangement, but Elizabeth is ecstatic, she’s an only child and so is extremely looking forward to sharing with Lauren. Whereas Lauren has five younger siblings and so needs her own room to be on her own. But things end up going differently than both girls had imagined, they’re given each other’s email addresses to get in touch beforehand and what starts off as rambly over excited email slowly develops into a friendship neither girl could have hoped for.

I’ve read books before which have been set up in an entire email format (Meg Cabot’s Boy series) and I had a lot of fun with it, as it didn’t read like a email at all, but flowed as a proper story. The same could be said about the emails Lauren and Elizabeth sent each other. Each alternative chapter was set as a pov from Elizabeth and Lauren, we would get to know about their lives and what was going on with them with their preparation with their big move and then an email was sent to each other at the end. To be honest I loved this entire story, but the emails were definitely a highlight to each chapter. Both girls had people around them that they could turn to with everything going on around them, but I felt that as the girls began to get to know each other, the more they were able to share their deep fears and secrets that they weren’t comfortable sharing with others. Although there were a few bumps along the way, the friendship that developed between these girls was one of the best ones that I’ve seen around.

At first when I was reading the alternative povs, I did favour reading Elizabeth’s story, things were crazy with her boyfriend constantly pressurising her, her being distant from her friend and her mum messing around with a married guy. I felt Elizabeth deserved much more than this and it was horrible watching her stumble along through this alone especially when her mum could be self-centred at times. Also Elizabeth for me was open about what she wanted, she wouldn’t hold back on her feelings and so it was easier to connect with her character more quickly than Lauren’s. Lauren for me was really distant at the beginning, she never displayed enthusiasm as Elizabeth did and it took me a while to get to know her character properly. But halfway through this book I found myself addicted to both girls stories, Zarr and Altebrando have created two great characters in Elizabeth and Lauren, that I did find myself getting a bit choked up too by the end when I had to say goodbye to them.

Both girls displayed a huge amount of growth over the course of this book, a lot of this was because the support and relationship they had established through their emails, but also because of some great secondary characters some which I had been rooting for from the beginning (Mark & Keyon) and some which came through in the end. Mark and Keyon were the sweetest ever love interests, they were guys who were so in touch with their feelings and actually went about doing things to express them in a meaningful way. Don’t get me wrong I love my tattooed bad boys, but these two guys went out of their way for both Lauren and Elizabeth on many occasions, it’s sad that they were only able to get to know the girls just a little time before they went off to college, but with the way things were I had a good feeling that both relationships would be able to withstand the long distance between them.

Roomies was a book which was left with an ending for you to make your own interpretation of. Whilst this would annoy certain readers, I think this ending was the best way to go for, as it leaves the reader with a lot of hope for what could happen next. Also with the way things were left, this book can leave readers with the hope that these two great authors will return to this story one day in the future and continue with where they left off. There are still a lot of things that I’d love to find out about, so would extremely look forward to a follow up book.

Roomies was a book which left me with warm fuzzies, it was a book which both authors dealt with so many real life issues in a realistic way, but was also a book which on many occasions left me with a huge smile on my face. This was my first book by Sara Zarr and Altebrando, but after the great impression this book left with me it certainly won’t be my last.

These debut books I had a lot of fun reading, with the majority of them they were read in one sitting type of books, because they just has so much going on, that I couldn't do anything until I'd devoured every last page. I'm glad that I get the chance to spend more time with fantastic characters with follow up books planned for The Bone Season and All Our Yesterdays, both books will be on my highly anticipated list for next year, with all three authors leaving the best impressions with me. And with the amount I loved Parallel and The Lost Girl I know I will be reading anything these great authors write.

I am finally glad that I was able to give authors such as Kristin Cashore, Sarah Fine and Jessi Kirby a try, I had heard some amazing things about these authors, and they honestly blew me away with their majestic worlds and realistic stories they had created. I am extremely looking forward to reading more of their books next year. If He Had Been with Me was one of my favourite reads of this year, it was a story which left me with puffy eyes, but was a story which was really beautifully written, the same could be said of You Look Different in Real Life. 

2013 has been an incredible year of new authors for me, I know that I will have many gorgeous books to look forward to next year from the above authors. Which new authors made it to your list?

Hello readers.  I’m doing another Box of Books Giveaway. My bookshelves are always out of control. When I go to a bookstore I always end up buying something.  I have to, it’s a NEED.
